The green startup scene has continued to grow

Green Startup Report 2026 now available in English

The Borderstep Institute has now published the Green Startup Report 2026 in English. The latest research findings on the development of the green start-up ecosystem in Germany are therefore now available to an international audience.

Growth Amid Declining Start-up Dynamics

The report analyzes the dynamics of sustainable business creation and shows that the green start-up community continues to grow, now comprising around 4,700 companies. At the same time, current data indicates a decline in start-up activity – despite strong technological innovation and the significant climate protection potential of these ventures.

The Green Startup Report is based on a long-term scientific observation of green entrepreneurship in Germany, conducted since 2013. It provides a key data foundation for policymakers, businesses, and academia to foster sustainable innovation and advance the transition towards a climate-neutral economy.

Strengthening International Visibility and Policy Relevance

With the English edition, the international visibility of the findings is further strengthened, and the exchange on green start-up ecosystems is encouraged.

The Green Startup Report 2026 is now available for free download.

Outlook: Green Startup Report 2027

The next Green Startup Report 2027 is already in preparation and will once again be published with the support of Borderstep’s partner network.

Together, we aim to further strengthen the role of green start-ups as drivers of ecological transformation in political decision-making processes and, in doing so, continue to develop suitable framework conditions for sustainable business models.
